Kim Jong Il Biography
Leader Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942, in the secret camp on Mt. Paektu in Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province, the son of President Kim Il Sung and the anti-japanese heroine Kim Jong Suk.
His family was a patriotic and revolutionary family in a way unprecedented in history.
He finished the course of primary and secondary education from September 1950 to August 1960.
In February 1953, he organized the “Group for the Study of the Short Biography of General Kim Il Sung”, the first group in our country for studying the President’s revolutionary ideology, achievements and lofty virtues.
In June 1956, he organized an expedition to the revolutionary battle sites in Mt. Paektu area with his fellow students of the Pyongyang Middle School No.1,which opened up the route to visit the revolutionary battlefields around Mt. Paektu.
He joined the Democratic Youth League(DYL) in December 1956 and from September 1957 he worked as vice-chairman of the DYL committee of the school (the chairman being a teacher).
He was admitted to the course of political economy, faculty of economics, Kim Il Sung University, on September 1, 1960.
He constantly paid deep attention to the other students’ study habits and to the contents of education so as to see to it that all the problems arising in education were solved from a Juche-orientated standpoint.
And he conducted ideological and theoretical activities with tireless thinking and exploration, so as to give ideological and theoretical answers to the questions urgently raised by the times and revolution.
The acme of his ideological and theoretical activities was his development of the theory of the leader.
On July 22, 1961, he became a member of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
He was posted to the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea in April 1964 and started working at his post from June 19 the same year.
He clarified the principal line in the work and activity of the Party is to firmly establish the leader's ideological system in the whole Party and energetically carried out the struggle to implement it.
He brought about a revolution in art and literature so as to build a Juche-oriented art and literature.
After working as an instructor and section chief on the Party Central Committee, he became the deputy head of a department of the Central Committee in September 1970, the department head in July 1973, and Secretary of the Party Central Committee in September the same year. He was elected to the Party Central Committee in October 1972.
He was elected to the Political Committee of the Party Central Committee at the 8th Plenary Meeting of the 5th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea in February 1974.
He systematized the President’s revolutionary thought, and declared that modelling the whole society on the Juche idea was the ultimate program of the Party.
He was elected Member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau, Member of the Political Bureau, Secretary of the Central Committee, and Member of the Central Military Commission of the Party at the Sixth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea in October 1980.
He solved an important problem arising in the succession to the revolutionary cause by continuing to promote energetically the work for laying the foundation of the Party.
He was acclaimed as the First Vice-Chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission(NDC) in May 1990, as the Supreme Commander of the KPA at the 19th Plenary Meeting of 6th Party Central Committee on December 24, 1991 and elected as the Chairman of the DPRK NDC at the 5th Session of the 9th Supreme People’s Assembly on April 9, 1993.
He led a flexible and bold diplomatic campaign in the nuclear confrontation between the DPRK-US and paid great attention to the struggle for rebuilding the international socialist movement under the banner of the Pyongyang Declaration.
After President Kim Il Sung’s death, he led the entire people to hold Comrade Kim Il Sung in high esteem and follow him as the eternal leader of the nation.
On October 8, Juche 86 (1997), leader Kim Jong Il was officially elected general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea as desired by the whole Party.
On September 5, 1998, the 1st Session of the 10th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK adopted a new Socialist Constitution which stipulates the state structure with the National Defence Commission at the helm and elected him Chairman of the NDC of the DPRK.
He defined Songun politics as a mode of politics reflecting the requirements of the present era and applying it smashed the imperialist attempts to stifle the DPRK, saved the destiny of socialism and defended the DPRK’s sovereignty and, furthermore, opened up broad vistas for building a great prosperous powerful nation.
Through the first north-south summit in the history of 55-year-long division held in June 2000 and the follow-up publication of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration he provided bright prospects for national reunjification and registered great successes in foreign relations.
He was reelected Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK at the 1st Session of the 11th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK in September 2003.
He was awarded the title of Hero of the DPRK(three times) and the title of Marshal of the DPRK.
