The Korean people and foreign friends commemorated the 92th birthday of President Kim Il Sung as the greatest holiday of the Korean nation.

People from all strata of society, foreigners and overseas compatriots who came to Pyongyang on the occasion of the Sun's Day visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, the President's statues across the country, including the statue on Mansu Hill in Pyongyang and the President's birthplace at Mangyongdae to pay their homage.

A national meeting took place on April 14 in Pyongyang to mark the 92nd anniversary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung. Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People’s Assembly, addressed the meeting.
    Meanwhile, similar meetings were held in provinces, cities and counties and army units.

A statue of President Kim Il Sung was erected at the Mansudae Art Studio in Pyongyang to mark the Day of the Sun. The unveiling ceremony took place on April 12.
    In another development, large mosaics were built at enterprises and in provinces. The mosaics represent the conviction and will of the Korean people to glorify the achievements made by the President who devoted all his life to the people, and add glory to the country under the Songun revolutionary leadership of Kim Jong Il.

On April 13, a ceremony of the three services of the Korean People’s Army to pay respects to President Kim Il Sung and pledge their allegiance to leader Kim Jong Il took place at the plaza of the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang.
    It was attended by KPA Vice-Marshal Jo Myong Rok, director of the General Political Department of the Korean People’s Army, high-ranking officers, officers and men. In response to his speech the servicemen took an oath. They chanted inspiring slogans and sang songs in chorus. Then there was a march past.

An oath-taking rally of young people and a joint national meeting of the Korean Children's Union organizations took place at the plaza of the Kumsusan Memorial Palace while the youth league officials and students and schoolchildren held a meeting for commemoration tree-planting in the arboretum of the Kumsusan Memorial Palace where the President lies in state and planted over 2,500 trees and flowers there.
    And there were colourful events such as a forum of the university students for telling about the great virtues of the President, an oratorical contest of the national schoolchildren’s palace club members, a schoolchildren's study tour to Mangyongdae, schoolchildren’s artistic performances at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace and the Pyongyang Students and Children’s Palace and an evening of entertainment held by young people and students in Pyongyang.

On April 12, a rally of workers, on April 13, a meeting of farmers and an oath-taking rally of women took place.

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a miniature sheet and a stamp to mark the Day of the Sun while the national fine art exhibition, ten-day film show, the 19th national scientific and technological festival were held as part of commemoration events.

The Mangyongdae Prize Games and the national university students’ basketball games were held.

The 17th Mangyongdae Prize International Marathon Race took place on April 11 in Pyongyang to mark the Day of the Sun.
    The long-distance race drew some 490 marathon runners from South Africa, Norway, Botswana, Ethiopia, China, Jilin Province of China, Kenya, Poland and the DPRK.
    The men’s race was won by Kenyan Morris Mureithi Mwangi, Ethiopian Eshetu Bekele Tessena came second and Jong Myong Chol from the DPRK placed third.
    The women’s event was taken by all Koreans: O Song Suk, Ryang Kum Hwa and Kim Jong Sun.
